I recently had the amazing opportunity to head to LA to screen Brave, People Like Us and Frankenweenie as well as attending the red (or green rather) carpet premiere and after party for the world premiere of Brave. While this trip had so much more going on than the movie Brave this post is all about the movie that is now sweeping the nation. Let me preface by saying you will need to gauge your childs fear factor because there are some dark parts in the movie, but I recently took my 6-year-old and she enjoyed it completely.
Set in Scotland, Merida is your typical teenager, who just happens to be a princess. As her life takes a turn in a way that she is not happy with she sets out to change her fate. Unfortunately her fate isn’t the only thing that changes and she has to deal with the consequences of her actions. Through the movie you see Merida and her family learn the art and importance of communication. In the end Merida is able to right her mistake and in turn ends up living the life she wants not the one everyone else wants for her.
I love the lesson taught in this movie and was able to talk about the lesson with my daughter. I am thrilled that although she is a princess in essence she doesn’t need to have a prince save the day, she makes the mistake and she makes it right while learning an important part of life. There’s a new role model in town for little girls, who knew carrying a bow and arrow could be so cool! I highly suggest seeing this movie, it won myself and my daughter over.
